Over 300 specialists to gather in Reykjavík to advance research, policy and solutions on marine plastic pollution

Third International Symposium on Marine Plastic Pollution
20–22 October 2026

Marine plastic pollution has become one of the defining environmental crises of our time, with plastic debris now present from the ocean’s surface to its deepest trenches, inside marine organisms and throughout the food chain. This October, Iceland will host over 300 scientists, policymakers, industry representatives and ocean stakeholders to strengthen collective action against one of the most pressing threats to marine ecosystems.

The Third International Symposium on Marine Plastic Pollution will be held at the Harpa Concert Hall and Conference Centre in Reykjavík from 20 to 22 October 2026. Discussions will centre on the latest scientific findings, viable solutions and the international cooperation required to curb plastic pollution and safeguard ocean health.
Plastics have now been identified in some of the most remote waters on Earth, including the Arctic and Antarctic regions, while microplastics are increasingly detected in marine species and in humans, a clear signal that coordinated efforts across science, policy and industry are urgently needed.

The Symposium is being organised by the Government of Iceland, in collaboration with national and international partners committed to the sustainability of the ocean. These include the Department of Forestry, Fisheries and the Environment of South Africa, the Ministry of Fisheries and Aquaculture of Brazil, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, African Cooperation and Moroccan Expatriates of Morocco, the African Atlantic States Process, the Intergovernmental Oceanographic Commission of UNESCO, and the International Council for the Exploration of the Sea.

Among the specialists attending, Anne Justino, a researcher from LMI-TAPIOCA whose work focuses on plastic pollution in the Tropical Atlantic, is a member of the Symposium’s scientific steering committee.

A poluição plástica marinha tornou-se uma das crises ambientais mais marcantes da atualidade, com resíduos plásticos presentes desde a superfície do oceano até suas fossas mais profundas, no interior de organismos marinhos e ao longo de toda a cadeia alimentar. Em outubro deste ano, a Islândia receberá mais de 300 cientistas, formuladores de políticas, representantes da indústria e demais partes interessadas na sustentabilidade oceânica, com o objetivo de fortalecer a ação coletiva contra uma das ameaças mais urgentes aos ecossistemas marinhos.

O Terceiro Simpósio Internacional sobre Poluição Plástica Marinha será realizado no Harpa Concert Hall and Conference Centre, em Reykjavík, entre os dias 20 e 22 de outubro de 2026. As discussões terão como foco os avanços científicos mais recentes, soluções viáveis e a cooperação internacional necessária para reduzir a poluição plástica e proteger a saúde do oceano.

Plásticos já foram identificados em algumas das águas mais remotas do planeta, incluindo as regiões Ártica e Antártica, enquanto microplásticos são cada vez mais detectados em espécies marinhas e em seres humanos, um sinal claro de que esforços coordenados entre ciência, política e indústria são urgentemente necessários.

O Simpósio é organizado pelo Governo da Islândia, em colaboração com parceiros nacionais e internacionais comprometidos com a sustentabilidade oceânica. Entre eles estão o Departamento de Silvicultura, Pesca e Meio Ambiente da África do Sul, o Ministério da Pesca e Aquicultura do Brasil, o Ministério das Relações Exteriores, Cooperação Africana e Expatriados Marroquinos de Marrocos, o Processo dos Estados Atlânticos Africanos, a Comissão Oceanográfica Intergovernamental da UNESCO e o Conselho Internacional para a Exploração do Mar.

Entre os especialistas participantes, a pesquisadora do LMI-TAPIOCA, Anne Justino, que estuda a poluição por plásticos no Atlântico Tropical, e é membro do comitê científico do Simpósio.
