Aurora Atlântica: France–Brazil Cooperation for an Oceanic Future

Held within the framework of the TAPIOCA International Joint Laboratory, managers and more than 150 Brazilian and French researchers and students gathered in Recife for the Aurora Atlântica event, an international cooperation initiative that aims to chart new paths for ocean research and sustainable development. Organized within the framework of the TAPIOCA International Joint Laboratory and integrated into the France-Brazil Season 2025, the meeting served as a platform to strengthen partnerships, expand the internationalization of science, and discuss joint strategies aimed at addressing the challenges of coastal and marine ecosystems.

The event was attended by high-level representatives, such as CAPES President Denise Pires de Carvalho, who highlighted the agency’s fundamental role in training master’s and doctoral students and promoting internationalization through programs such as CAPES Global.Edu, Move La América, and AUGM.

Also present were Denis Rolland, president of Cofecub – a French program promoting university cooperation with Brazil—as well as leaders from dozens of educational and research institutions from both countries.

Preparing the ground for the Terra-Mar exhibition

Aurora Atlântica preceded the opening of the international exhibition Terra-Mar (Land-Sea), which arrived in Brazil as part of the France-Brazil Season activities. The exhibition, which has also been shown in Montpellier, France, promises to immerse the public in the beauty and complexity of the oceans, reinforcing the central message of the event: science at the service of marine life.

A future written by many hands

In addition to consolidating research networks, Aurora Atlântica emphasized the importance of collaborative and accessible science. For many participants, the initiative symbolizes a renaissance—an “aurora”—in Franco-Brazilian relations, with the potential to influence global agendas on the ocean.
