The spotted goatfish, Pseudupeneus maculatus, is an important fish resource of northeast Brazil, being also a crucial component of the biodiversity. This fish is also considered a highly valuable seafood compared with other categories of fishery resources and it is one of the few species captured by the artisanal fleet of Pernambuco that is destined for exportation. Nevertheless, there remains a lack of large-scale studies on P. maculatus using fishery-independent data and linking the habitat type and physical characteristics to the stock distribution. Thus, this study aims to describe the population aspects, feeding habits and spatial distribution patterns of P. maculatus on the tropical Brazilian continental shelf.

O saramunete Pseudupeneus maculatus é um importante recurso pesqueiro no Nordeste do Brasil, sendo também um componente crucial da biodiversidade. É também considerado um recurso de alto valor quando comparado a outras categorias de pescado, e é uma das poucas espécies capturadas pela frota artesanal de Pernambuco destinada à exportação. Ainda assim faltam estudos em larga escala sobre P. maculatus, usando dados independentes da pesca e vinculando o tipo de habitat e as características físicas à distribuição do estoque. Portanto, este estudo teve como objetivo descrever aspectos populacionais, hábitos alimentares e padrões de distribuição espacial do P. maculatus no Nordeste do Brasil.
